In Oberursel, Germany, the Frankfurt International School (FIS) has recently reimagined the areas surrounding its cafeteria to create new spaces for socialising, relaxation and learning. Designed by interior architecture practice Designfunktion Rhein-Main, the project, completed in summer 2025, features three outdoor areas alongside a winter garden seamlessly connected to the Upper School.
From the earliest design stages, the Designfunktion teams brought together teachers, architects and school representatives to gain a clear understanding of users’ specific needs.
The aim was to create spaces that support every aspect of school life — whether for dining, informal study, meeting up with friends or enjoying quieter moments. This approach has resulted in open, comfortable and versatile environments that encourage both social interaction and focused learning.

To furnish the outdoor areas and the winter garden, Designfunktion selected Fermob furniture, which has been part of the campus for several years. « Fermob furniture has already proven its durability in other buildings across the Frankfurt International School campus. Even in a school environment, where furniture is put to intensive daily use, it has demonstrated outstanding resilience over time,» highlights Marina Kahl.

Beyond its outstanding durability, the Luxembourg collection also won over the project team with its rich colour palette. The selected shades — Honey, Red Ochre and Cactus — extend the cafeteria’s design concept, creating a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces. The result is a collection of welcoming, colourful and long-lasting spaces designed to enhance students’ everyday experience throughout the year.
